Sneak Peek

Vanessa

In a town built on the slope of a steep hill, with properties stacked upon one another, the higher the lot, the heftier the price. Duke’s family owned a sprawling villa perched on the highest point of Positano, one of the loveliest towns on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The seventeenth-century adobe mansion clung to the cliff, while the fragrant scent of the surrounding lemon trees filled the air. Leaning against the railing, Vanessa peeked at the Marina Grande Beach right below her, the dark gray sand in stark contrast with the impossibly blue Tyrrhenian sea.

She sat at the table where the house staff had arranged a carafe of lemonade and a plate of cheese for Vanessa and Duke to nibble while they waited for dinner to be ready.

She asked. “I guess somebody is driving our luggage in, correct?”

Duke poured the refreshment into two glasses and handed her one. “My chauffer is doing that, yes.”

He had been quieter than his usual self. That worried Vanessa. She didn’t mind just sitting out on a sprawling patio, overlooking gorgeous landscapes. She didn’t mind silence around Duke because that tended to be comfortable. They enjoyed each other’s company, sometimes just for the sake of being together.

Keeping her stare on the speedboats crisscrossing the calm waters of the bay, Vanessa commented. “You’ve been quieter than usual.”

When he didn’t reply, she focused her stare back on him. Duke shrugged.

“I don’t mind the silence, but something is off about you since this morning. Is it because Sarah and Mack bailed on us, and it’s going to be only you, me, and Angie for two months in an Italian seaside town? I like the idea.”

He fidgeted with the flowers in a vase on the table between them; but didn’t reply.

“You fuss like that when something bothers you. What’s the problem?” Vanessa asked.

“You know me too well.” Duke eyeballed her, then finally let go of the rose petals and whispered, “Just to be clear, this doesn’t bother me, that’s not why I haven’t mentioned it. Angie isn’t joining us either.”

“Your cousin is so full of it. She keeps cancelling on me.”

Duke grinned. “I knew you’d be upset. That’s why I was looking for the best way to break it to you.”

“I’ve got good reasons for being upset. We’re about to graduate, I was hoping to convince her to help me get that internship with Wide World. That magazine is the best one covering international politics at the moment. This trip was the perfect occasion to introduce the subject to her.”

“You know Angie owns that magazine, right? And she adores you. Just say the word and she’ll give you a job.”

Vanessa shook her head. “Thanks, but I’ve got to do this on my own merit.”

Duke’s smile split his full lips and lit up his eyes. “Never expected less from you and I know you will get t.”

Her eyes widened. “It’s going to be only you and me for two months in an Italian seaside town. I’m not sure I like the idea.” This time the excitement left her voice when she repeated the words.

He scoffed. “You don’t trust me?”

“Don’t be silly. Of course, I trust you.”

I’m not sure I can trust myself.
