Natalie
Just when Steve and I have found our happy place, my douchebag ex-fiance decides to make a comeback tour. Problem is, he wants me to be the headliner.
Delusional much?
Now, if only I could get over how much he terrifies me!

Steve
There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to keep Nat happy. And safe. If it means taking on her abusive ex, so bring it on.
Except, she’s way stronger than she gives herself credit for.
I couldn’t be more proud of her. She just needs a little reminder.

Chapter 2 – Steve

We stroll back to our suite at the Sexy & Sinful Resort after a four-course dinner during which Natalie barely spoke.

I nudge her side with my left elbow. “Are you gonna tell me what’s been bothering you since lunch?”

She shrugs, making the long, wide sleeves of the top she’s wearing float in the balmy evening air as if she had grown wings. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Her cheeks glow red and I bet it has nothing to do with the bright color of the floral pattern of her clothes.

I wiggle a finger at her before folding my arm around her waist, bringing her close to me albeit only physically, and sliding a hand inside the back pocket of her black jeans. “Don’t give me that shit. You haven’t been yourself since lunch.” I scratch my head finally figuring something out. “To be honest, you were fine until we got the email messages from Bella and Kate.”

I pause to give her time to reply as we keep moving toward our bungalow. She fidgets with the ends of her leather belt, kicks a couple of pebbles, and sighs. Still, she doesn’t utter a word.

I offer, “Are you concerned about the transportation bidding?” She groans and sidesteps, but I pull her in. I’m on to something. My heart stutters at the idea she’s soldiering on, when I’m willing to ease her mind of whatever is troubling her. I kiss her temple. “Hey, babe. Don’t worry. We’ll vet the company thoroughly. They won’t cause us any trouble.”

She halts, gazes at the stars, and I’m done with her avoidance. I cup her shoulders, turning her to face me. I forget to breathe at the pain in her tear-filled eyes. I gasp when her sorrow pierces my guts. My heart thuds against its cage trying to claw its way to her.

She needs to know she’s not alone. She’ll never be alone as long as I live.

I press my palms against her silk covered arms. “If there’s anything I can do to ease your pain, tell me right now. I’m physically unable to watch you suffer like this and do nothing. Let me in, Nat.”

She glances around, nods, and intertwine our fingers. She kissed my knuckles before cupping my right cheek and caressing me with her thumb.

When I think she’ll remain silent, she murmurs, “It’s about time I tell you something.” She swallows hard. “Let’s talk in our room.”
