Sneak Peek

Chapter Four

Izzie

Get a grip, girl. Focus on why you came down to Brazil. Izzie reminded herself as she struggled to stop gawking.

She had forgotten what a sight Tristan Knight was. Time stood still as her gaze gobbled up his tall frame. The elegant white dress shirt and dark gray pants barely contained his bulging muscles. Two years her senior, he had just turned thirty-two. The tropical sun had tanned his soft skin setting off his light-brown hair with streaks of gold and making his high cheeks beam with a healthy glow.

She gulped in a useless effort to alleviate the sudden dryness in her mouth at the glint of hurt in his dark blue eyes. They squinted while a muscle ticked on his square jaw, and his nostrils flared. Her addled brain deserted her, and silence poisoned the air between them. She witnessed pain turn to scorn when his full lips inched up in a sardonic smile.

Izzie couldn’t bear it, yet she was unable to look elsewhere.

She drew a blank, forgetting the speech she had rehearsed in her head countless times during the flight as well as the ride from the airport. Clogged by his anguish and her remorse, her mind had no room for reasonable thoughts.

His hurt. Her sorrow. No atonement.

How could there be any forgiveness for what she had put him through?

I can’t do this.

She fought the urge to bolt. There was too much at stake for her to take the easy way out now.

Izzie had expected a cold reception, but the heartbreak coloring Tristan’s expression did horrible things to her. The raw emotion left her gutted, exposed. Her sins rushed back to haunt her. It was not as if she didn’t already deal with them on a regular basis.

A sudden ringing in her ears stole her balance and Izzie grasped the golden lectern on her left to steady herself, sending the hostess’s papers gliding to the floor.

“I’ve got this.” The soft-spoken brunette squatted to pick up her notes.

Izzie felt her cheeks burn.

Focusing back at the six-foot-something mountain of rage looming in front of her, rational thoughts went out the door. Izzie felt like the naive teen she once was. Right about the time her life got an unexpected turn for the better.

Or so she thought.

Now’s not the time to go there.

Izzie squared her shoulders, recalling why she had decided to reach out to Tristan. She had a mission where failure wasn’t an option. She’d better bite the bullet. She expected to have a hard time facing him, not that his wounds were still open and festering. She was ready for her own guilt brought on by her past sins. She did not factor in this devastation she experienced caused by his pain.

The prolonged silence was made worse by the way he crossed his arms over his broad chest and set his long legs wide apart, as if ready to pounce.

“Well?” His deep baritone stirred parts of her she had forgotten existed.

Izzie opened her mouth to reply, then closed it again when no sounds came out. A chill of annoyance ran down her spine at the oddness of her behavior.

His icy stare locked on hers. “I never thought I’d live to see the day. Little Miss Isolde Anderson at a loss for words. I’ll be damned.”

His irony wasn’t lost on her. When they were kids growing up in North Ranch, they argued endlessly about any and all insignificant details. It got worse when they started dating while they were going to Westlake High. Except, their arguments then ended up in hot make-out sessions, if in public. Or sweaty, mind-blowing sex, if behind closed doors.

Don’t go there!

Shaking her head to dismiss images of Tristan’s muscled legs tangled with hers, or his strong fingers digging into the soft flesh of her hips as he drove her wild, Izzie took a deep breath. The memories weakened her knees and made her see things that weren’t there. Like his eyes turning a darker shade of indigo blue, a flicker of heat in them. The kind of heat they generated in the past, not today’s anger. It was gone before she could be sure of what she picked up. His gaze went back to the cold rejection that chilled her bones, despite the sweltering tropical evening.

Eager to break the spell, she blurted the first thing that came to mind, “How’s Lilly?”

At the sound of his mother’s name, another pained glint flashed in his eyes, and he slouched his shoulders for a fraction of a second.

Sliding back the scowl, he replied, “Peachy. Thanks for asking.”

Liar, she thought, surprised she could still read him.

She lost that right ten years ago.

She jotted her chin up to hide her pain. “You’re not making this any easier.”

“I wasn’t aware I was supposed to.”

When she lied to him, she also lost the right to his compassion. It didn’t matter she lied to protect him. He never learned that. He only knew the lie. She didn’t regret protecting Tristan though.

It was the right thing to do, the only thing to do.

At fifteen, she landed a dream deal with a record company, too inexperienced to realize she was about to embark on a path to fame and misfortune. Head over heels in love with her best friend, Izzie believed she could conquer the world as long as Tristan stayed by her side. And conquer the rock and roll world she did, with him as her partner. Tristan wrote the lyrics that her fans screamed in packed stadiums on sold-out tours around the globe. He instilled in her the confidence she lacked to pour her heart out in each recording session. He was her rock, her haven.

At twenty, when she broke him, she lost much more than his love. She lost her ground, her North.

Now, she needed to convince Tristan she had changed. She came prepared to beg, but the words vanished from her mind. How could she plea for his forgiveness if she never forgave herself?

Praise for Knight’s Edge Collection

5* – This is a terrific set of rock romances! – Viper Spaulding, Reviewer.

These standalone romances pack a huge emotional punch and tell the story of the formation of the Knight’s Edge rock band. The author brilliantly overlaps the timelines a bit on the books, so some of the scenes are in more than one book, giving us the same events from more than one viewpoint. Each of the band members has a completely different background, bringing their unique talents to the band and making each romance a separate yet tightly connected adventure.

5* – You don’t want to miss this! – Rhonda Hicks, Vine Voice Reviewer.

You don’t want to miss this!! Let Liz Gavin introduce you to Tristan, Noah, Aidan, and Duke. Four men coming from seemingly different worlds and circumstances and finding their way into one another’s lives and forming the band “Knight’s Edge”. Each story is a heartfelt, panty-melting experience that will entertain and keep you in suspense from beginning to end.

5* – Such a great collection – Kindle Customer Review

These stories focused more on the band mates rather than the typical rockstar party house style. (…) The women were strong, independent, willing to give love despite all the hardships they faced. The men were faithful, loving and willing to put the work into getting their woman or getting them back. All around great stories!

5* – An absolutely amazing, must-read collection – Karen Galloway, Reviewer.

Each book has a great, entertaining, well-written storyline with engaging characters that pulled me into their stories. I loved all the guys in Knight’s Edge and I couldn’t put this set down. I was hooked from the very first chapter. This a really enjoyable, sizzling, romantic, must-read box set.
