Welcome to Spotlight Sunday. I’m Liz Gavin and today I’m thrilled to introduce you to Heather Young-Nichols.

LG: Where are you from?

I’m from Saginaw, Michigan which is about two hours north of Detroit.

LG: Do you have hobbies? What is your favorite pastime?

I love baseball. I used to play it but now I just watch. And reading of course! I don’t read enough right now actually.

LG: If you had a TARDIS – or any other time machine – would you revisit any period of your life? If so, what advice would you give your younger self?

I would probably go back to myself in high school or college and tell that youngster that she doesn’t need to be on top of everything all the time. It’s OK to let something slide once in a while.

LG: Tell us about something your readers would be surprised to learn about you.

Hmmm… That’s a tough one because I’m sort of open so it’s got to be something weird that I wouldn’t think to mention. Maybe that I’m one of seven children? We grew up with one bathroom. Lol Or maybe that I learned sign language because the boy I had a crush on was deaf.

LG: What was the kindest, nicest thing anyone has ever done to you? Was it unexpected?

It was totally unexpected.

I was at the grocery store grabbing a few things which turned into $80. As I waited, the older man behind me started chatting and we had a little conversation. Then when it came time to pay he insisted on paying for my items. I told him he didn’t have to and honestly there were people in the store I’m sure were on a tight budget but he insisted.

He said it was his wife’s birthday and she’d passed away. His family was having a blood drive in her memory. It had to do with how she died but he didn’t elaborate and I didn’t ask. He also said he couldn’t donate due to his own health so this was his way of honoring his wife.

I went ahead and let him pay then of course thanked him several times. The next day I went and donated blood in his wife’s memory.

LG: How long have you been an author? Why did you decide to write?

I began writing seriously in 2009. I’ve written since I was a kid but this was my first attempt at a book. But I didn’t get a publisher until 2014.

I decided to write because the stories are in there and they had to come out. I decided to publish because I thought others might actually enjoy those characters in my head.

LG: What was the inspiration(s) behind your bestseller title?

The book that has sold the best isn’t even the one that got me bestseller status. For this I’m going with Cross (Courting Chaos 1) because that has been my single bestseller and the last book in the series is about to come out September 16th.

Inspiration hit me at an All Time Low concert two years ago and their drummer Rian Dawson was the inspiration for Cross. I love All Time Low so Cross has an extra special place in my heart.

LG: Is there any message from Cross (Courting Chaos 1) with which you wanted readers to walk away?

Part of the plot involves a predatory character and underage girls. The message from that would be to not stand by and watch things happen. If you know they’re wrong do something about it even if it’s anonymous. It doesn’t have to be in your face. But don’t be on the wrong side of history when it comes to consent.

LG: Have you ever learned something surprising about yourself while researching and/or writing a book? If so, could you share it with us?

I’ve learned that I’m even more outgoing than I thought I was which is saying something. Lol But I’ve also learned that sometimes, I get nervous to ask for things. The not asking people for things didn’t surprise me but the nervousness did. Approaching other authors is daunting. Makes me feel like an impostor.

LG: Please provide all your contact information so our readers can stalk you.
